Webinar Slides: Combating Vaccine Misinformation Online - March 11, 2021

Vaccines are more important than ever, but false theories about their dangers continue to circulate online. These rumors and conspiracy theories erode the public trust in the safety and effectiveness of all vaccines. Social media companies have been working to remove false and misleading information about vaccines from their sites, but misinformation is difficult to stop. Many rumors are spread by people who may not realize they are sharing questionable claims, and are sharing them to be helpful without realizing the harm they are doing.

The National HPV Vaccination Roundtable partnered with Vaccinate Your Family and Hager Sharp to host a webinar to empower vaccine advocates to spot and combat online vaccine information. These slides contain information and action steps to identify and combat false vaccine information online.

Pediatricians and Dental Professionals Can Work Together to Increase HPV Vaccination Rates

The same strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that cause cervical cancer also can cause oropharyngeal (head and neck) cancer. Dental professionals, like pediatricians, have a vested interest in recommending HPV vaccination to their patients. Through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) developed three new fact sheets to educate dental professionals and pediatricians about head and neck cancer and HPV and how to work together to increase HPV vaccination rates. Access the fact sheets now at www.aap.org/oralhealth or within the AAP HPV Champion Toolkit (see HPV handouts).

Administrative Supplements for NCI-Designated Cancer Centers to Support Collaborations to Enhance HPV Vaccination in Pediatric Settings: A Summary Report

In July 2014, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences issued a funding opportunity announcement for an administrative supplement for NCI-designated cancer centers to promote collaborations between the cancer centers and state/local cancer coalitions and HPV immunization programs.* The short-term goals for the one-year supplement were to: (1) conduct an environmental scan and (2) develop/enhance linkages with existing coalitions and programs, with a focus on HPV vaccine uptake in pediatric care settings. The long-term goal is for cancer centers to utilize collaborations enhanced through the supplement to develop or expand applied research to increase HPV vaccination.

The 18 cancer centers that received the HPV vaccination supplement are listed in Table 1. This report provides an overview of the activities of the supplement recipients, including collaborations among grantees, environmental scan activities, and the formation of linkages between cancer centers and local and regional partners (e.g., immunization and cancer control coalitions). Key findings of the environmental scans also are presented, as are efforts by grantees to disseminate and build upon the work funded by the supplement.

Report: Strengthening the Effectiveness of National, State, and Local Efforts to Improve HPV Vaccination Coverage in the United States: Recommendations From the National Vaccine Advisory Committee

In February 2018, recognizing the suboptimal rates of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in the United States, the assistant secretary for health of the US Department of Health and Human Services charged the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) with providing recommendations on how to strengthen the effectiveness of national, state, and local efforts to improve HPV vaccination coverage rates. In the same month, the NVAC established the HPV Vaccination Implementation Working Group and assigned it to develop these recommendations. The working group sought advice from federal and non-federal partners.

This NVAC report recommends ways to improve HPV vaccination coverage rates by focusing on 4 areas of activity: (1) identifying additional national partners, (2) guiding coalition building for states, (3) engaging integrated health care delivery networks, and (4) addressing provider needs in rural areas. Released Aug. 2018.

Promoting Comprehensive Cancer Control Successes: A Communications Framework

Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) programs and coalitions are developing strategies and
implementing interventions that are successfully impacting policy, systems, and environmental
changes and influencing health behaviors.  Although the many accomplishments have been
documented by CCC programs and coalitions through the creation of success stories, publicizing
and disseminating the stories can pose a challenge.  Promoting Existing Comprehensive Cancer
Control Successes provides a framework that can guide CCC programs and cancer coalitions in
sharing their success stories with a broad audience. It is based on interviews conducted with
representatives from CCC Programs and cancer coalitions who shared their experiences in
successfully promoting their stories.

CNE, CME, CE: Someone You Love HPV Documentary & Toolkit

Documentary “Someone You Love” now available to physicians, pharmacists and nurses free of charge for Continuing Education credit.

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other interprofessional healthcare team providers are missing opportunities to recommend and vaccinate adolescents with HPV vaccine. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that all boys and girls receive the HPV at age 11 or 12 when the immune response to the vaccine is optimal. This activity provides compelling stories of several individuals fighting cervical cancer. Expert physicians from around the world provide the scientific and medical background related to the disease process and prevention provided by the HPV vaccine.

The Indiana Immunization Coalition’s HPV Provider Resource Tool Kit will be provided along with the film. The tool kit provides best practices information related to the scope of the problem (low HPV vaccination rates), the burden of disease associated with the HPV virus, the importance of recommending the vaccine alongside the other adolescent vaccines, strategies for discussing HPV and the vaccine with patients, and resources that providers can use to educate parents about HPV and the vaccine.

Credit available until July 1, 2020.
